The Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) is pleased to announce the launch of a Canada-wide survey examining how Canadian independent music companies access the United States market. This survey is a component of a larger research project that will be conducted by The Centre for Trade Policy and Law on behalf of CIMA, and it will also include an economic and policy analysis component.

As our 2013 Sound Analysis report revealed, international expansion is a key component of the growth and development of successful Canadian independent music companies. With Canada being a relatively small music market, Canadian companies require a larger marketplace and more opportunities to place their material and acts. According to the findings of Sound Analysis, 19% of industry revenues are earned in the United States. Furthermore, this research revealed that almost half of Canadian music companies (44%) seek to expand their business in the United States. This further supports the argument that international export is one of the key strategic objectives for the industry.

The Accessing The US Market survey seeks to better understand the challenges and opportunities for the Canadian independent music industry as they relate to doing business and performing in the United States. The results of this survey will help us gain a deeper understanding of the breadth and depth of Canadian music exporting opportunities to the US in the past, present and future.
