Letter to the CRTC re: SiriusXM Licence Renewal

October 10th -- CIMA submits a follow-up letter to the CRTC regarding SiriusXM's licence renewal application.

In August, the Commission renewed the broadcasting licence for the satellite subscription radio services Sirius Canada and XM Canada from 1 September 2019 to 31 December 2019, under the terms and conditions of their current licence. This delayed the CRTC's decision on the proposed changes the applicant requested.

Although CIMA participated in the formal consultation process in April 2019, we believe that the recent extension granted by the Commission is an opportunity to reiterate our position on two key points of our submission:

1.     CIMA opposes the applicant’s request for a reduction in Canadian Content Development (CCD) contributions.

2.     CIMA opposes the applicant’s request for a reduction of the percentage of allowed “eligible initiatives (discretionary contributions)” in the first two years, and eliminating it entirely in years 3-7.
