Position Title: Independent Label Services

Report to: Vice President of Legal and Business Affairs

 

Position Scope:

The Independent Label Services’ primary focus is to effectively manage and nurture CMRRA’s relationships with new and current signatories to the Independent MLA, as well as numerous individual manufacturers, and to provide consultation, insight, and regular status updates to Business Affairs and Management. This role is also a key contributor in the completion of departmental projects and in the process of identifying new initiatives.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Effectively liaises and partners with independent labels and distributors operating in Canada to assess potential for CMRRA to enter into the MLA with them
  • Effectively negotiating key terms of the Independent MLA, and assessing reasonable requirements of the licensing relationships
  • Acts as escalation point for problem files related to MLA signatories as well as Licensees under the PAYP program
  • Is responsible for all activities related to an MLA signatory ceasing operations with CMRRA
  • Liaises and coordinates with Business Affairs and Management on Licensee non-compliance matters while retaining role as key operative in those matters
  • Utilizes experience and industry insight to assess and effectively manage negations with non-compliant labels
  • Liaises with department Supervisors to coordinate staff availability for projects requiring Administrators input and efforts
  • Other duties as required by Management

 

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

  • Comprehensive and practical understanding of music publishing, including licensing, agreements, copyright and royalties, at least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Be at ease in participating or leading process improvement initiatives and demonstrate a high level of self-reliance
  • Capable of effectively running meetings with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form (English and French)
  • Skilled at performing multiple tasks simultaneously in an environment with dynamic priorities
  • Demonstrated experience with both external relationship management and expectation management
  • Proven problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage by exception leveraging on strong experience of prior situations
  • Thorough knowledge of the CMRRA-Independent Manufacturer Mechanical Licensing Agreement (Indie MLA)
  • Thorough knowledge of the Pay-As-You-Press (PAYP) licensing program
  • Familiarity with the Canadian music scene (Quebec music scene knowledge is an asset)
  • Good knowledge of query programs and application development
