Jonathan is thrilled to apply his background in cultural policy analysis to advocating for CIMA members and engaging with decision makers at all levels of government. Along with conducting in-depth policy analysis and research on the issues that matter most to members, Jonathan will also be responsible for CIMA’s communications.

“As a policy person who actually grew up writing songs, playing shows, and touring in vans, I can’t wait to work together with my knowledgeable, enthusiastic colleagues at CIMA to spread the word about the crucial role that independent music plays in Canada’s culture and economy,” says Jonathan.

“We couldn’t be happier to have Jonathan join the CIMA team, and to have someone of his background and passion work on the policy and advocacy issues that are of the utmost importance to our members,” says CIMA President Stuart Johnston.

Jonathan holds an LL.B. from Dalhousie University and recently completed an LL.M. at Osgoode Hall, specializing in intellectual property law, media regulation, and cultural industries.

As a long-time musician and music lover, he will champion the independent music scene by building on CIMA’s long, impressive tradition of advocacy. Prior to joining CIMA, Jonathan was an Intellectual Property Consultant advising on cultural heritage projects that involved areas such as film, publishing, and digital media preservation.

Among Jonathan’s greatest loves are music, cultural policy, and writing avidly in his notebooks. When he isn’t submersed in pens, paper and coffee, Jonathan would love to hear your ideas about promoting diverse Canadian culture through the creation of independent music.

You can speak to him anytime at 416-485-3152 ext. 223, or write to him at jonathan@cimamusic.ca.
